First Snow of the Season!
Hawk and I were able to get out for the first day of calling this season with about 4 inches of snow. We were seeing dogs on every stand, but on a few they weren't coming to the foxpro as hard as we anticipated. On our first stand, I was able to shoot a coyote that showed up about 8 minutes into the stand. It came across the small draw and bedded down at about 200 yards. I dialed up the Nikon Coyote Special scope and nailed it right from where it lay. We were unable to recover the animal but did see significant amounts of blood as the dog disappeared into the sage brush thickets. On our second stand, Hawk set up on a fence line above a big draw about 50 yards from where I shot my buck at this year. About 45 seconds into the stand a coyote showed up coming in hard right behind Hawk. Hawk wasn't able to get a clear shot without re-adjusting and the yote was continuing to charge. He was able to turn is body and stop the dog at 7 YARDS! He grabbed his shot gun and unloaded on the dog three times, hitting it as it disappeared down into the bottom of the draw. This was the closet that we have had with a coyote since we have started calling together. I was unable to witness the action because I was on the other side of the hill but Hawk was excited. We made two other stands that afternoon having coyotes come in to about 200 yards and bed down on us. We were unable to get either of those yotes. We made our last stand out of a recently cut corn field above a canyon that we had never called before. We fired up the foxpro and low and behold after about 5 minutes a pup comes in hard to the edge of the circle. I adjusted to make the shot as the dog which came into my left and I let if fly over the top of it with my 22-250 at about 20 yards. Pretty frustrated with our finally stand, but overall a good day of calling. We made five stands and saw five coyotes; not a bad day.
